The party was to proceed to-day via Rennes to Auray, where accommodation had been arranged for a week. The only halt, besides Rennes, was at Dol, to see the church, where the appointed speaker was Mr. E. W. Lovegrove, F.S.A., an acknowledged authority on church architecture. St. Samson, to whom the church-formerly cathedral-is dedicated, was born in Dyfed, his father Breton and his mother Welsh. He became a disciple of St. Illtyd and subsequently abbot of Llantwit. He was never bishop of St. David's, nor did he carry away with him, as wrongly supposed, the pallium to Brittany. St. Teilo visited him at Dol when the Yellow Plague was raging in this country in 547. He died about 565, and was buried at Dol. His festival is July 28. He is credited with having been the founder of Marcross Church in Glamorgan. Mr. Lovegrove's paper on the architecture of the church is as follows Dol-de-Bretagne. The see of Dol owes its origin to St. Samson, who crossed into Brittany from the older Britain about the middle of the sixth century. His legendary life may be read in the Book of Llandaff."
