30 THE NATIONALIST. CYWYDDAU CYMRU. Wedi eu Dethol a'u Golygu gan Arthur Hughes. (Bangor : James & Foster. 3/6.) Well done, Arthur Hughes ! We record here the expression that escaped our lips when we had finished reading this Anthology of Welsh alliterative poetry. We have no space at our command to furnish the reader with a detailed account of the book in this number of the " Nationalist ;" we hope to be able to refer to the book at greater length in a future number. The writer is a young Welsh scholar of unusual promise. He had to choose from a wide field and he has chosen wisely and well. Some captious critics might complain that the Odes quoted from in the book are not given to the reader in their complete form ; but, we take it, that extracts and extracts only, speaking generally, were possible if the main purpose of the book was to be kept steadily in view. Wre have come across one slight error, which seems to have escaped the notice of the proof reader. The last two lines of the three englynion by Ieuan Brydydd Hir should have been marked off as three distinct couplets. We do not entirely agree with the Author as to his estimates of some of the Welsh bards, and while admitting that Islwyn owes a great deal to Wordsworth, we are not sure that there are many traces of the influence of " The Excursion " to be found in the writings of the South Wales poet. Mr Hughes acknowledges his indebted¬ ness to many writers, and among them we find Prof. Lewis Jones. In our opinion, the book would have been better had.some of Mr. Jones's notes been omitted from it. Mr. Hughes dedicates his book to his gifted mother, Gwyneth Vaughan. This, is as it should be. His Foreword is as modest as it is pathetic, and Prof. Anwyl's scholarly and suggestive Introduction adds value to a very charming volume. We entirely agree with one of the greatest Welsh Scholars of the day, who declares the book to be the best introduction in the language to the literature of the Cywydd. We expect great things of Mr. Hughes ; this his first book does him great credit. THE EDUCATIONAL ENDOWMENTS OF MONTGOMERYSHIRE. By T. E. Morris, M.A., Barrister-at-Law. (Newtown—Phillips & Son). Mr. T. E. Morris has prepared an excellent summary of the Educational Endowments and Endowed Charities of Montgomeryshire for the use of the Education Authority of that county, and we strongly recommend the course adopted in this matter by Montgomeryshire for adoption by every other county in the Principality. Mr. Morris's condensed summaries are admirable ; they contain all the salient and essential points. The Report may well serve as- a pattern for any and every other report that may be prepared for a similar purpose,
