flrwpstli Deanerp magazine. Vol. II. (New Series). MARCH, 1906. No. 159. LLANIDLOES. There will be a service for MEN ONLY on Sunday, March 4th, at 3-35 p.m. This will probably be the last of the series for this season, as the Bishop is expected on the first Sunday in April, and as the finer weather comes on it is wiser to drop the services than to let them dwindle away from inanition. The address last month was given by the Vicar of Conway, who attracted a good con¬ gregation, who went away thoroughly pleased by his manly, lucid and straightforward ad¬ dress. He also preached in the evening, but could not be induced to speak on Mon¬ day, to the great disappointment of the C.E.T.S. The following Clergy have kindly promised to preach on the Wednesday evenings in March :— March 7—Rev. Gwilym Lewis, Vicar of Llangurig. 14—Rev. W. L. Richards, Rector of Penstrowed. 21—Rev. J. Edwards. Vicar of Carno. 28—Rev. L. H. Evans, Vicar of Rhayader. The Vicar is very anxious that there should be good congregations on Wednesday evenings. It is very disheartening to in¬ vite strangers, who often come at some sacrifice to themselves, and then to have only an handful of people for them to speak to. He also hopes that during Lent there may be a greatly increased attendance at the ordinary week night services. If only half of our Communicants were to make it a rule to attend one week-day service, what a difference it would make ! But after all, why only half ? How many, or rather how few, are there who could not come once a week ? And the large majority could very well come if they made a real effort, both on Wednesday and on one other night. And it is " real efforts " that Lent is meant to en¬ courage. God does not care much for what costs us no effort, while He does value more than we can realise anything that we do for Him at even a little self-sacrifice. There was a special meeting of the Mothers' Union on Wednesday, February 14th, when the Vicar gave a lecture on the " Mothers' Union in Great Britain," which appears to have been much appreciated. The lantern was under the able management of Mr. R. Hamilton Owen. The attendance was very fair, though we had expected to see more mothers present. As March 25th, the feast of the Annuncia¬ tion (the day on which there is everywhere a special celebration for members of the Mothers' Union i falls this year on a Sunday, it will, we hope, be found possible for most of our members to communicate. There will be a meeting of the Com¬ municants' Guild on Thursday, March 8th» after service, when the cards will be given out. All members and communicants who intend becoming members are requested to make a special effort to attend this meeting. There will be Sewing Parties in the National Schools on each Tuesday in Lent, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, March 6th. Anyone who likes to attend will be very welcome, and everyone is asked to bring " needle, cotton, thimble and scis¬ sors." Gifts of material will be most accept¬ able.
