TOYSTM D8jffiEI(Y nglGfJEHJB * No. 117. Vol. X. SEPTEMBER, 1902 Price One Pennv. GENERAL. Our readers will be glad to hear something of the induction of the Rev. S. Ed war ds, late Vicar Trefeglwys, into his new parish cf Bontdd. The service took place on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. Evensong up to the end of the third Collect was taken by Bev. E. M. Baker (brother of Mrs. Edwardes), spe¬ cial psalms being used and the Lesson read by the Eev. I. R. Lewis, R D. Archdeacon Williams then led the new Vicar to the door of the church, accom¬ panied by Mrs. Holland (as Churchwarden and patroness) and the clergy, including the Rector of Criccieth and the Vicar of Llanidloes. Alter the ceremony of locking and unlocking the door and tolling the bell (very few times, it was noticed !) the Vicar was led in succession to the font, reading desk, lectern, pulpit, and holy table, appropriate passages of Scripture and prayer being impressive!, read at each point by the Archdeacon, who then gave a short address, and a very striking service was brought to a close. Those present then adjourned to Caerdeon, where Mrs. Holland entertained a largo number of the local clergy and gentry in honour of the occasion. We wish Mr. and Mrs. Edwardes every possible blessing in their new sphere of work. LLANIDLOES. We are glad to hear that Lucy Palmer, second daughter ot Mr. J. M. Palmer, .Woodlands, a id one of the pupils at the National Schools, heads the list of those successful in taking Scholarships at the Llanidloes County School. We hope that she will be as diligent and successful in the Intermediate as she has been in the Elementary School, and that a pros¬ perous future will make good the promise of her youth. Below we give the report of H-M.'s Inspector on the National Schools. If the present Education Bill passes and the schools are trnnsfeired in part to the Local Authority, the Managers will at least have the satisfaction of handing them over in a tl.ormodily efficient condition- Both have earned the higher grant, and from our knowledge of the Infant School, we cannot understand that there t-hould be any hesi¬ tation in the matter. LLANIDLOES NATIONAL SCHOOL. Mixed School.—This School has been steadily im¬ proving for some years, and is now in a very credit¬ able state of efficiency, the upper classes being especially well taught. Infant School.—A fairly sa*<sfaotory level of effi¬ ciency is reached by the Infant School in most sub¬ jects. Reading, however, sti 1 remains the weakest point in the instruction, and *\ umber is not very well taught in the second Class. A mere educational use might also bo made of the Kindergarten occupations. The higher principal grant is again recommended with some hesitation. The day of the Church Schools Trip dawned in a far from promising way, and it was with many mis¬ givings that folk wended their way to the station?. And in fact when we arrived at Aberystwyth and found the rain coming down in one unbroken stream one felt trips were after all nothing but a delusion and a snare. There were somc\ however, who cher¬ ished an unshaken belief that the Church Trip must have fine weather (in spite of some sad experiences in the past) and thi-< year at least their faith v*as justified, the skies clearing about eleven and the day turning out gloriously fine There was some extra¬ ordinary blundering on the pai-t of the Railway Com¬ pany on the outward trip- The first train was sup¬ posed to call at the stations beyond Moat Lane, but so few coaches vrere attached that it could only take up at Caersws. The result was that the unhappy people from Caersws onwards had to wait for a couple of hours, and moreover, when the second train did arrive it was no better provided with coaches than the first, and passengers had to be packed like sardines in a tin. The present writer wras one of thirty-five men, women and children crowded into two compartments intended to hold less than halt that number. How. ever, on arrival more coaches were sent for, and the return journey was made in comfoit-
