OTKYSFU DGTOW EQPPIP * No. 95. Vol. VIII. NOVEMBER, 1900. Pkice One Penny* LLANIDLOES. The Sale of Work, by which it was hoped to clear off the debt still remaining on the Infant School was duly held, as announced, on October 31. We say it was hoped, for as we write, judging from the scant attendance in the afternoon, we can scarcely venture to expect a very great financial success. However, of this we have no certain information. The Sale was held in the old Schoolroom, which with its new desks, easily convertible into tables and seats, was soon made to fit the purpose. Two stalls stood on the left presided over by managers and their wives or sisters, while in front a blackboard proclaimed in legible writing, the order of proceedings : 3 o'clock, Opening of the Sale ; 3-45. Infants' Concert; 4-15, Recitation Competition; 5 Tableaux; 5-45 Childrens' Concert; 6-30 Singing Competition (children) ; 7 Tableaux ; 7-45 Childrens' Concert; 8-30 Open Singing Competi¬ tion ; 9-0 Distribution of Prizes—a programme which was carried out with slight deviations. Passing on we came to the corner where at neat little tables hold¬ ing four or five a piece, Mrs. J. Davies of the L. & P. Bank, dispensed plain tea at 6d., and meat tea at Is. per head. It was, by the way, a sad over-sight that this particular attraction was not alluded to in the descriptive bill circulated before the Sale. Mrs. Davies was assisted by Miss Jenkins of Brecon. The Vicar opened the proceedings with a few brief remarks, in which he alluded to the flourishing state of the Schools (in all things save finance), and to the good work being done by Mr. K. M. Davies and the Infant Mistress Miss Phillips. What he said received practical confirmation later on, in the excellent way in which after a very short preparation the children got through their various programmes First of these whs the Infants' Concert, which was as follows :—1 Chorus "Tramp, tramp," 2 Chorus " Have you heard of Grumbling Tom," 8 Scarf Drill, 4 Recitation " A stub-born Donkey," Olive Jones, 5 Song " Won't you buy niy pretty flowers," Lily Roberts, 6 "Grandma" (children and Lizzie Breeze), 7 Chorus "I'm a little busy bee," 8 Scarf Drill. It was hard to tell which was most to be admired—the steadiness and discipline °f the conceited pieces or the self-possession and ease of the tiny individual performers- Out of some thirty entrants the reciters were weeded down to ten, who appeared in public, and the prize given by Mr. R. Hughes, for the first division was awarded to Mary Jane Hamer and Lucy Palmer (equal), and for the lower standards given by Mrs. Davies-Jenkins to Fred. Davies. In the other competitions the results were as follows. In several cases unfortunately there was only one entry.
