TOYSTLI D^P^Y m$WW * No. 78. Vol. VII. JUNE, 1899. Price One Penny SUNDAY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Sunday School Association for this Deanery was held in the Church Room, Oarno, on Friday, May 19th. Notwithstanding the incle¬ mency of the weather and other drawbacks there was a fairly good attendance of Clergy and Laity. The Rural Dean presided, and the meeting was opened with singing and prayer. The minutes of the last meeting were read, and approved and confirmed. Arrangements were made for the Catechist's visits to the different Schools, subject to the approval of the Managers not present that day. The place and time of next meeting was left to be arranged by the Rural Dean and Secretary. The Rev. W D. Roberts, Llanidloes, then introduced the subject set down for discussion "Whether the time had not arrived to revive the Public Catechizing in the Church Service." He treated the subject very ably in its legal aspect and also from a practical point of view, and his address was listened to with much interest. Discus¬ sion followed in which Messrs. Proctor, Carno, J. Davies, Solicitor, Llanidloes, The Secretary, and Mr. R. M Davies, Llanidloes, The Rev T. E. Jones, Vicar of Carno, and Rev. E. 0. Jones, Vicar of Llanid- joes, took part. Most of the speakers approved of Public Catechizing and testified to its great usefulness, but some were of opinion that it would be better done at a separate afternoon service than in the ordinary evening service. The Rural Dean called attention to the forthcoming Diocesan Examination, and a very successful meeting was closed with singing and prayer. Before the meeting, the Clergy and Laity were enter¬ tained at the Vicarage, and a vote of thanks was accorded Mr- and Mrs. Jones. CHORAL FESTIVAL. On Sunday, May 14th, the Bishop of Bangor made his first appearance in this parish, when he admin¬ istered the rite of Confirmation in the Parish Church to 25 local candidates, 4 from Llangurig and 3 from Llandinam. During the service which took place in the afternoon at 3 o'clock, His Lordship gave three addresses which were strikingly interesting and instructive and were listened to by the candidates aud congregation with great attention. His method of confirming the candidates singly rendered the service peculiarly impressive. The following were th» local candidates :—Edward Benbow, Joseph Llewelyn Evan6, Harry Halford, Richard James Jones, Hugh Llewelyn Lewis, Henry Shone, Jno. Richard Williams, George Francis Kerr, Llewelyn Augustus Webb, Arthur Idloes Webb, Thomas Shepherd Grant, Edw. Hopper, Isaac Bradbury, Abraham Owen, Elizabeth Davies, Gwendolene Kerr, Nellie Montgomery Webb, Beatrice Annie Marpole, Edith Jane Jones, Annie Helena Davies, Beatrice Margaret Roberts, Ada Walters, Ellen Hopper, Mary Elizabeth Phillips, Beatrice Jeannie Bennett. The majority of whom, we were glad to see, made their first Communion the following Sunday. On Saturday, May 20th, in the absence of the Ven. Archdeacon Williams, the Rev. M. Jones, H.D , ueld a court for admitting Churchwardens in the Parish Church, when Messrs John Davies, David Kinsey, J. M. Palmer and Col. DaYies-Jenkins were made Churchwardens for this parish. As the Archdeacon was not present, there was no charge delivered and and the business done was purely formal the reason being that the Bishop intends holding a visitation some time during the year. On Whit-Monday the Archidiacjnal Choral Festival was held at Machynlleth. Considering that it was meant to draw choirs from the southern half of the Archdeaconry from Dolgelley to Llangurig, it was disappointing to find that only five parishes were represented of which Llanidloes was one. We take this opportunity of sincerely thanking those members of our ehoii who at their own expense and with some amount of sacrifice went to the Festival. They have
