WHYSm D(^I}Ef(Y n$&pip. * No. 67. Vol. VI. JULY, 1898. Price One Penny. Our readers ha,ve no doubt missed the heading "Unit¬ ed Clerical Meeting," which used to appear occasion¬ ally in this column, with the attendant signature " T. Evan Jones, Hon. Sec." The United Clerical Meeting is no more. The Hon Sec, resigned some time ago ; whether the demise of the U.C.M. was the effect and the resignation the cause we will leave our readers to decide. Our present purpose is to give an account of an interesting ceremony which took place at Penegoes Rectory on Wednesday, June 22nd, when the Vicar of Carno was presented with an Illuminated Address and a set of Books in recognition of his long services as Secretary of the joint Clerical Meeting of Arwystli & Cyfeiliog. There were present Revs. M. Jones, R.D., W. Richards, R.D., Canon Trevor, J. & Mrs. Williams, Penegoes, T. E and Mrs Jones, Carno, R. Richards, Darowen, D. 0. Moi-gan, Llanbrynmair, E. 0. Jones, Llanidloes, O. K. Williams, Caersws, and Mr. J. Williams, Machynlleth. The text of the address is as follows :—" Presented to the Rev. Thomas Evan Jones, Vicar of Carno, by the Clergy of the Deaneries of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog together with a set of Books, as a small token of their high appreciation of the very able and efficient manner in which he performed the duties of Honorary Secretary of the two Deaneries for npwards of ten years." Trevor, Rector of Machynlleth, John Williams, Sector of Penegoes, W. Rhys Williams, Llanbrynmair, 0. K. Williams, Caersws, Hon. Sec, June, 1898. The presentation was made by the Rural Dean of Arwystli, who referred in eulogistic terms to the effic¬ ient way in which Mr. Jones had discharged his duties, sparing neither time, trouble, nor expense. The Vicar of Carno in replying said how highly he appreciated the good opinion of his brother clergy. He would always cherish with care the precious document they had presented to. him. It was precious to him as a recognition, he would not say, of his services, but of his good intentions, and still more precious for the autograph signatures ot so many of his friends whom he held in high esteem. He would hand it on to his children, and, he hoped to hie grand children who would value it as highly as his wife and himself did. Canon Trevor said he was in entire sympathy with the presentation, and happily pointed out the use of the address as a corrective of low spirits and depression. The Rural Dean of Cyfeiliog spoke of the predecessors of the Vicar of Carno as Secretary and said that, he was second to none of those he followed. Lunch had been provided by the kind hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Penegroes. The following sums have been received in the Deanery for the Diocesan Board of Education :—Rev. M. Jones, R.D., 5s., Rev. T. E Jones, 5s., Mr. John Davies, L. & P. Bank, Llanidloes, 5s., Rev. T. H. Hughes, 2s, 6d., Rev. W. D. Roberts, 2s. 6d., Rev. O. K. Williams, 2s. 6d., Mr. J. R. In these days when the Voluntary system of Education is so severely attacked on all sides, some effort ought to be made in this part of the Diocese to give more substantial help to the Board of Education.
