* WJPSTLI DepERY tiprJ&DJfr * No. 63. Vol. VI. MARCH, 1898. Price One Penny. LLANIDLOES. Tenders are invited for cleaning the interior of the Parish Church Copies of the Specification may be obtained from the Parish Clerk, and sealed tenders are to be lodged with him not later than 4 o'clock p.m. on Friday the 11th inst. The Vicar and Church¬ wardens do not bind themselves to accept the lowest or any tender. We very much regret to have to record the fact that since the last issue of the Magazine the Bishop of the Diocese, whom we announced to hold a confir¬ mation on the 20th of this month, was suddenly seized with an attack which has made it impossible for him to discharge his episcopal duties at any rate for some time to come. Our sincerest sympathy goes to him and his family in their severe affliction, and we rejoice, in common with the whole Diocese, to understand that he is skwly but steadily recovering from the attack. The Bishop had before his illness secured the Help of the Bishop o! Swansea in the work of confir¬ mation, and we are therefore glad to say that the service announced for Sunday the 20th of March will Hot be postponed but will be held on that day at 3 o'clock p.m., by the Bishop of Swansea. We trust that as the time is short, all candidates will regularly attend the classes which have been announced in church. The Churchwardens have at last determined to tackle the long delayed and much needed work of thoroughly cleaning the in-side of the Church—roof avails, windows and all, and have advertised for ten¬ ders for the work. This will necessitate an expen¬ diture beyond their ordinary resources and we trust that Others will follow the good example of two parishioners who .have promised the sum of two pounds and one pound respectively towards the ex¬ pense. No one who has any feeling of respect for c {sod's House can fail to see the necessity of the work, or be other than glad to take a share of the burden. There have been loud complaints lately of the con¬ dition of the road to Church, and anyone who has used the road during the winter months, cannot but see that those complaints are thoroughly justified. It is nothing less than a scandal that, a road constantly used by so large a section of the inhabitants should he allowed to remain in its present condition. We understand that it is on the list of ri ads which ..'the Town Council have determined to repair. Would it not be well for churchmen to send an influential deputation or get up a petition to the council in order to obtain their immediate attention to the matter. THE CHURCH LITERARY SOCIETY. On February 7th, Mr. Jno. Davie!*, L. & P Bank, read a very interesting and instructive paper on "The Church Fabric and its surroundings " to a small bivt attentive audience. It is a sad pity that so few were present, as the facts gathered together with so much care and so clearly set forth could net but conduce to a more intelligent interest on the part of Church- people in their place of worship. The following week Essays were read as follows :-— "Newspapers," by Mr. Arthur Jones ; "Nelson" by Mr. Fred Davies ; " Some aspects of Hunting " by Mr. E. D. Davies. SOCIAL EVENING. . In our programme of the Church Literary Society, which we gave last month the attentive reader must have noticed that February 21st, was summarily dis¬ missed with the words " Social Evening." The fact is, we knew no more details, the arrangements having been put into the hands of a small committee consisting of Messrs. R. M. and E. D. Davies, and Mr. J. Harry Jones, and they refused to be inter viewed on the subject at so early a date However, all know now that they decided that the evening should be occupied by a Tea and Mock Trial, and right well were the arrangements carried out. Very wisely they called in feminine help for the tea and in fact prevailed upon Miss Marshall to manage this part entirely and we can safely say it was the best tea of its kind we have ever seen in Llanidloes. It was
