*■ OTHY8TM D^1}EJ(Y npjJIZIQE. * No. 29. Vol. III. MAY, 1895. Price One Penny. THE PLAINT OF THE GENERAL SECRETARY. The contributors—or perhaps we oughtjjto say—the editors in the various parishes of the deanery are supposed to^send in their copy to me by the 20th of each month. On the 24th of April I had received Nothing except about halt' a column from our Carno editor (who by the way is invariably punctual). This is by no means an isolated case, but it is Mentioned to show with what difficulties I have to contend. It is absolutely impossible to produce a ■Magazine punctually and regularly if you never know whence, or when, your subject matter is to come Verb. Saj). LLANIDLOES. The Vicar has had several enquiries put to him as ^° the truth of the rumour that he was about to leave, funded to in our last, and he asks me to state that it ls hke most other rumours, quite without foundation, ^•t the same time, he added, you may mention that it i8 just as true now as ever it was. What I mean, ls that the criticisms passed on me have not affected ^j but the fact that I cannot make both ends meet — > UUU 0J.It/ IfclUlJ lilidb JL (JO,IJ liU 0 IJltlJ^C UUOn C11U.O J-lICCli atiects me a great deal. I am, I hope, always ready to listen to advice, but my action on the point alluded to it - ■ • ■• - " ■■■ * ■ ■ !ti your last issue has been carefully thought out, aod my conduct perfectly consistent, and I shall ^either alter it nor run away. But it is not generally *no\vn that I am by far the poorest Vicar of recent ^ars, in a pecuniary sense as well as in that which is piost obvious. The living, owing to the depreciation fr tithe, brings in at least £70 a year less than when ^aBon Williams was here, and before he left he enJoyed a Canonry worth £350. Mr. Hughes .wpeatedly told me, that he could not live onj the llcome, and he was a bachelor ! Moreover, unless I 01 greatly mistaken, he had considerable private ^eans, which is not the case with me. You will ^cierstand—unless you are remarkably superior to orldly considerations, not to say common honesty— at if I bad a living which in any way suited me, ith a larger income offered me, I should very "r°bably tear myself away from_Llanidloes. _, J-he Vicar announced in Church last] Sunday that ailon Williams had very kindly promised two guineas „AVar"ds clearing off the debt on|the organ if the rest the money required was raised before Whitsuntide. It will be remembered that the restoration was under¬ taken as a memorial to the late Rev. John Hughes, one of the most justly popular clergymen in the diocese. Of the actual sum —about £160—received, scarcely half has been received from people who were his parishioners, which seems to us remembering the universal grief excited by his death, a most surprising fact. Directly this debt is wiped off, the Vicar hopes to put in a new stained glass window—probably in the West End, if this idea meets the approval of the Vestry.
