No. 2* »v>N the remarks I have already made, I have taken it for granted Jy that our Church systems are to be formed, at least in their main features, according to the pattern set before us in the New Testa¬ ment. On the foundation there laid down all Christian sects through¬ out the world profess to build, not only in regard of theological truth, but also of church government and action. He who will not abide by the verdict of universal Christendom, must be prepared to defend his position by arguments which have hitherto escaped the notice of all denominations, otherwise he will lay himself open to the charge of being very presumptious and crochetty, and desirous of standing forth as a remarkably independent inquirer and thinker. Why should church action in these days differ in anything material from that of the apostolic age ? Had not the apostles and their fellow-workers the same truths to teach as we have ? Had they not men of the same kind to govern in the church and to save out of it ? Did they not plant and organize churches in large cities and in thin¬ ly populated country districts, just as we do ? If, however, we were left in darkness as to the apostolic modes of action, we would be obliged to put our own wise heads to work, in order to devise meth¬ ods exclusively ours; but as we have before us apostolic rules and * Corrections of misprints in No. 1.
