No. 22. OCTOBEE, 1865. Pbjgb 2d. Wednesdey—Public Meeting.—Continued. The Rev, Joseph Jones was called upon, and delivered the following address on — THE THEOLOGY OF OUR CONNEXION. ?T is with very great diffidence and even reluctance I rise to I offer any remarks on the subject mentioned, for, not to speak \of the lateness of the hour, the subject itself is one of the most comprehensive and important that could at any time exercise our thoughts. It is more important even than our History and Polity, highly as we value these, and deeply interested as we have been in listening to the able treatment of these matters by the two brethren who have preceded me, for it is our Theology that gives worth to our History, and vitality to our Polity. Under any circumstances, therefore, I should feel quite incompetent to do justice to a subject like this. But, and this makes my position still more difficult, I have been called upon almost at a minute's notice to apeak upon it, and that as the substitute of a dear brother whose heart we know is with us, but who has been prevented being here through indisposition ; a brother, moreover, who is eminently fitted for such a task, and who, on account of his fitness in this respect, has been chosen, unanimously and most deservedly, within the last few months to fill the Theological chair in one of our Colleges. I need say no more to justify the reluctance with which I now stand before you. But what can I do ? The moderator has summoned me here, and against his mandates there is no appeal, and then to disobey would be most discourteous to you, especially after the call you have so unanimously made upon me. Well, then, bear with me while I «ffer a thought or two, not so much on ojur Theology as tSbout it.
