Oct. 4, 1899. BYE-GONES. 213 time he did tihis, lie could scarcely walk up the hill from Llangynog to the watershed at the boundary of the counties of Montgomery and Merioneth. When he got to the top of the hill overlooking the vailey of the Dee he thought of the lines: — "As when the weary traveller gains The height of some o'erlooking hill, His heaifc revives, if o'er 'the plains He eyes his home, though distant still." His heart also revived, but he was glad to get home to his own fireside. Very few people had such a thorough knowledge of the Bible as he had; he seemed to have it all by hearf;. He lived a quiet blameless life{ ever trying to do some good as far as it lay in his power, and he was much respected by all who knew him. On Wednesday his remains were laid to rest in Llandderfel Churchyard, over¬ looking that beautiful part of the valley of the Dee Avhich he loved so long and well.—T. R., Llan¬ dderfel. OCTOBER 4, 1899. NOTES. OSWALDESTRE HOUSE.—It is interesting to notice that the Duke of Norfolk has just erected a very fine building in Norfolk-street, Strand, to which he has given this name, so emphasising his title of "Baron of Oawaldestre." Be. ANCIENT WELSH BIBLE.—There is extant at Lavar Villa, Glyn, in the possession of Mr David Jones, formerly of Havod Gynfawr, an old copy of a Welsh Bible dated 15S8. It is printed in black letter, adorned with many woodcuts and plates in vogue at the time. The orthography is somewhat different from the present, e.g. : — Leuiticus—Diharebion—Llyfr y Pregethwr — Sophronia—Abdias—Tr Epystol Gyntaf Gyfre- dinol i Sanct Petr. The title Dadguddiad is not in any way given at the commencement of the last book ; it is simply styled—Gvveledigaeth loan y DiUnydd. T. F. SIR WILLIAM VAUGHAN, THE DEVIL OF SHRAWARDINE (June 8, 1898, et ante).— According to the Perfect Occurrences of Parlia¬ ment (Oct. 1644), "Col. Mytton, having intelli¬ gence of Sir William Vaughan and a party of the enemies commanders to be fourth of the garrison of Shrawardine, renowned Col. Mytton losing no opportunity marched himself with a party and surprised Sir William Vaughan him¬ self and 12 Captains, Lieutenants and other officers." From the Diet, of Nat. Biog, (Wil¬ liam Vaughan), we learn that their going forth from the Castle was to attend Shrawardine Church, and that they were surprised and taken prisoners while on their knees receiving the Sacrament. J.B A, EPITAPH IN PREES CHURCH.-A small brass plate in the aisle of this church has the following inscription, engraved below rude delineations of a skull, crossed bones, hour-glass, spade, and pickaxe :— Robert Hand, Died 7ber. 21, 1757, Aged 72. Vermis in Vita Pulvis in Morte. One wonders if the poor man was "eaten of worms," like Herod the King ; or if be only said, with the Psalmist, " I am a worm, and no man." The words, however, seem as if they were mis¬ placed, and should read Pulvis in vita, Vermis in morte. Many texts of Scripture acquaint us that we are " but dust," and so, Pulvis in vita. Job was inspired to write, "After my skin, worms destroy this body ;" therefore, Vermis in morte. " The sure and certain hope" contained in his ad¬ ditional words " Yet in my flesh shall I see God " completes the "Sj>es, vermis, et ego" of Judge Owen's epitaph (September 15, 1897.) Shrewsbury.
