On both occasions he dis¬ tinguished himself in the Bishop's examination. From 1884 to 1887 Mr Peate was in charge of the parish of Sheepy Magna, in Leicestershire, after which he served, from 1887 to 1895, the curacy of Christ Church, Brighton. Since 1894 he has been in charge of Bourne End, in the parish of Bovingdon, Herts.—Jan. 18. The Rev D. Lloyd, curate of Llangollen, has been presented to the vicarage of Lees wood.— Feb. 8. The Rev Owen Davies, senior curate of Flint, has accepted the living of Pont-bleiddyn.—'Mar. 1. The Rev Wyndham Madden, M.A., curate of Houghton-le-Spring, has been presented to the rectory of Longford, Newport, Salop.—Mar. 8. The Bishop of St. David's ha3 appointed the Rev Canon D. Lewis, canon residentiary and vicar of St. David's, to the archdeaconry of Carmarthen, vacant by the preferment of Arch¬ deacon Shadrach Pryce to the deanery of St. Asaph. Canon Lewis, on his ordination in 1863, was licensed to the curacy of Aberystwyth.— Mar. 22. The Rev F. R. Ellis, Vicar of Much Wenlock, and perpetual curate of Bourton, has also been appointed perpetual curate of Benthall.— Mar.29. The Rev G. 0. Holt, of Shrewsbury, has been inducted to the living of Astley St. Mary, on the presentation of Mr J. E. Severne of Wallop. The Rev Thomas J. Jenkins, B.A., perpetual curate of St. John's, Morriston, has been ap¬ pointed by the Bishop of St. David's vicar of Llanbadarn-fynydd with Llanano, Radnorshire. —April 19. The Rev J. R. Burton, headmaster of Kidder¬ minster Grammar School, has accepted the living of Bitterley, Ludlow, vacant by the death of his father-in-law, the Rev J. Walcot.—April 26. The Rev. James Charles Martin Chitty, M.A., curate of Marystowe-with-Thrushelton, has been presented to the rectory of Hanwood, near Shrewsbury. Mr Chitty is a graduate of Pem¬ broke College, Oxford, and was ordained by the Bishop of Exeter to the curacy of Marystowe in 1893. The Rev John Wynne Davies, son of the Vicar of Llansilin, who, as we announced a week or two ago, had been appointed to the curacy of Wren- tham, has since been offered bv the Buhcp of Norwich the vicarage of West Bradenham, near Thetford, and he has accepted it. The value of the living is £200 and a house.—May 3. The Ven. Archdeacon Wynne Jones, vicar of St Mark's, Wrexham, has been offered and has accepted the living of Llangollen, vacant by the resignation of the Rev Henry Jones. The living of Llangollen ia worth £280 per annum, and is in the gift of tihe Bishop of St. Asaph, whilst St. Mark's is in the gift of the Vicar of Wrexham, and of the gross value of £187, out of which the retiring vicar pays £180 to curates.—May 10. The Rev John Jones, vicar of Llannor, Pwll¬ heli, has been offered, and has accepted the living of Llanwnog, Montgomeryshire. Mr Jones is a graduate of St David's College, Lampeter, and was ordained in 1864- to the curacy of Llanelly. He was appointed vicar of Tal-y-llyn in 1869, of Llanfaas with Penmon in 1871, of Menai Bridge in 1872, and of Llannor in 1879.—May 17. The Queen has been graciously pleased, on the recommendation of Lord Salisbury, to approve the name of the Rev J. S. Brownrigg, M.A., secretary of the National Society and of the Welsh Girls' School, Ashford, for the Honorary Canonry in Bangor Cathedral, which lapsed to the Crown during the avoidance of the see.— May 24. The Bishop of Llandaff has presented the Rev John Lewis Davies, curate of Merthyr Tydfil, to the rectory of Llaneugrad with Llanallgo, Anglesey. The Ven. Archdeacon Thomas inducted the Rev W. Christopher, late curate of Tondu. Bridgend, to the living of Llanwyddelan on Wednesday evening.—June 21. Mr R. B. Benson has presented the living of Easthope to the Rev A. Wollaston Hutton, M.A. Mr Hutton has just edited, with an introduction, a new editiou of " Essays on subjects connected with the Reformation in England," by the late Samuel Roffey Maitland, D.D.—June 28. LLANGELYNIN OLD CHURCH AND STOUP (May 17, 1899).—Since mentioning the Holy Water Stoup in the porch, I have been informed that the water was formerly supplied from the roof of the church, but during some repairs to the roofing the pipe or channel for tho water was accidentally destroyed. MADOC AP OWEN GWYNEDD AND THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA.-I do not think it has been stated in Bye-Gones that " a curious account of Madoc's discovery of the Welsh Indians " is given in the Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy (13th ed., London, 1753, VIII., 160.) I am indebted for this information to a note in Notes and Queries by Mr J. Hobson Matthews, who adds that he supposes the Letters were written about 1685. W.O.
