414] BYE-GONES. Aug. 5, 1896. by Mr Herbert Lewis. In the whole of England and in five of the counties of Wales a qualification of £100 a year in land is re- Suisite for Commissioners of Land Tax, but in ardigan, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Merioneth, Montgomery, Monmouth, Pembroke, and Radnor no property qualification is required. Why Anglesey, Brecknock, Carnarvon, Denbigh, and Flint should differ from the other counties of Wales, and why those other counties should be exempt, no one knows, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer can throw no light on the subject. It is an interesting archaeological ques¬ tion, and deserving of research. In reply to Mr Lewis, Sir M. Hicks-Beach said he did not pro¬ pose to abolish the qualification where it now existed. AUGUST 5, 1896. NOTES. OSWESTRY PUNISHMENT SIXTY YEARS AGO.—1 have just been speaking to a gentleman who was born in Oswestry in 1823, who has left the town very many years. He recalled as crossing the Bailey Head the fact that about the year 1832 he saw a man stripped and tied to the railings in front of the Guild Hall and flogged by the Town Crier. He could not recollect the offence of which the man had been convicted. He says that the late Dr. Cartwright, as medical officer, had to stand by to see that the punishment was properly inflicted. J. P.-J. SHROPSHIRE WORDS AND PHRASES (Oct. 9, 1895). Roble, a sorb of rake. Hartshorne says, "I never heard it in this sense but once, and then it was used at a mill, under the south side of the Wrekin, to describe an instrument with which oats are stirred in an oven." (Salopia Antigua, 1841, page 549). Widdershins.—Miss Burne heard from an in¬ formant at Gondover that if you see a magpie flying in the contrary direction to the sun you must throw something at it, and say " Bad luck to the bird that goes widdershins." She adds, " A single instance, so far as we know, of this word, in Shropshire." {Shropshire Folk Lore, 1883, page 223.) Sangered, suffused with blood. I have only heard this word in the extreme east of Shrop¬ shire, and should be glad to know of any other instances of its use. R.E.D. Shrewsbury.
