210 BYE-GONES. Nov. 1, 1893. her sister Mary Evans, quam afflictum et perdite amabam, yea, even to anguish. They both started and gave a short cry, almost a faint shriek. I sickened, and well nigh fainted, but instantly re¬ tired. Had I appeared to recognize her, my fortitude would not have supported me. Vivit, sed mihi non vivit—nova forte marita Ah ! dolor ! alterius cara a cervice pependit Vos, mala fide valete accensae insomnia mentis, Littora amata valete ! vale ah ! formosa Maria. Hucks informed me that the two sisters walked by the window four or five times as if anxiously. Doubt¬ less they think themselves deceived by some face strangely like me. God bless her ! her image is in the sanctuary of my bosom, and never can it be torn from thence but with the strings that grapple my heart to life. This circumstance made me quite ill. I had been wandering among the wild wood scenery aud terrible graces of the Welsh mountains to wear away, not to revive, the images of the past. But love is a local anguish : I am fifty miles distant, and not half so miserable. Mr Palmer adds a translation of the Latin verse by his friend, Mr J. Arthur Thomas— She lives, yet lives not mine to be, Methinks another's bride is she And clings to his embrace. Ah me ! Farewell my hot soul's cheating dream, Farewell the fields that dearest seem, Farewell to Mary, beauty's beam. NOVEMBER 1, 1893. NOTES. EVERALL'S.—This is the name of a house in the village of Llandinam, but I have not met with any one who has been able to explain why it is so called. I may mention that " Thomas Everall, Gent," was one of the High (or chief) Constables of the Hundred of Newtown in 1638. R. W. A MAYOR'S BANQUET NINETY-TWO YEARS AGO.—A CURIOUS CUSTOM.—I find the following among the papers of the late Mr. Askew Roberts :— Richd. Croxon, Esqr's Mayor's Dinner, October 30th, 1801, & Sunday's Dinner, Nov. 1,1801. Miss Croxon lent me, to copy, a M3. book endorsed on the back as above; and explained to me that it was the Custom in those days to send presents to the Mayor! Hence the enumeration of articles so sent opposite the names in the list of guests. The Mayor was expected to give Six or Seven dinners during his year of office—including one each quarter to the Grand Jury at the Sessions. Guests. Presents Sent. A. Arrowsmith.Mr. 6 B. P.
