May 4, 1892. BYE-GONES. 299 INTERIOR OF THE RESTORED HANMER CHURCH. MAT 4, 1892. NOTES. SHREWSBURY CAKES.—Thefollowrng early mention of Shrewsbury Cakes, from a letter bear¬ ing date August 17, 1602, in " The Loseley Manu¬ scripts," edited by A. J. Kempe, F.S.A. (1836, p. 355), appears in Notes and Queries ;— Lest you should think this countrey ruder then it is, I have sent you some of our bread, w'ch I am sure wilbe dainty, howsoever it be not pleasinge: itisakinde of cake w'ch our countrey people use and made in no place in England, but Shrewsbury, yf you vouch safe the tast of them, you enworfchy the countrey and sender. Ed. GIBBETING.—Corroboration of the following Btory is much to be desired :—Once upon a time there was at the Coed,in the parish or township of Manafon, in the county of Montgomery, If m. S. of Llanfair Caereinion, an inn or posting house kept by a couple of the name of Lloyd. These persons were in the habit of murdering guests who remained in their house, if they were possessed of money or valuable goods, and afterwards burying the corpses in a wood near. At length they were caught, tried, and convicted, and sentenced to be hanged, which was done at Montgomery, in the precincts of the gaol. The corpses were then taken to a hill near their former residence, and there gibbeted or hung in chains on an oak tree. The "stouls" of that tree were dug up by the father of a man now living, when he was making a drain. The place is called Gibbet Hill to this day, and very old people relate that their fathers had told them that the chains with which the corpses were fastened to the tree clanged when moved by the wind. This story is noticeable on account of the place of gibbeting being distinct from the place of execution. Kid Neb Takw. QUERIES. POOL QUAY WEIR.—The construction of this weir must have entailed enormous labour and skill. Is there any tradition about or historical re¬ ference to the date of its construction ? Is it sup- §osed to have been the handiwork of the monks of trata Marcella ? Quebist.
