THE OLD GALLOWS TREES AT DOL- GELLEY.—I recollect seeing, in the year 1849, two old oak gallows in Dolgelley gaol—kept with ancient lumber in the attic above the prison. One was pointed out to me as the "tree" on which the poor Hwniw mater suffered the last penalty of the law. They were both of the same type—made of rough massive oak—consisting of two side posts let into feet, and the cross-beam. Each gallows was made wide enough for the cart which bore the culprit to pass between. The parts were after¬ wards taken to pieces and there deposited in the prison lumber-room just named. C.T.B. The original MS. is in the possession of the sister of the writer of the Verses. She still survives and resides in Oswes¬ try, aged 77. X.
