confus'd manner that I have but barely time to eat my Victuals. I thought some time ago to have found some employment in London among the Sociable Part of Mankind; but in spite of myself & all my Friends, I was Fairly baulkd, and at last, brought into such a dilemma that I had but one honourable way to extricate myself, by accepting of a Clerkship aboard of this Ship, I might indeed if I had properly applied have met with a place in Town that Wd have barely kept me from want, but you must know that I never fish'd in that road but always thought to pick up something either in the public offices or the Merch's accompting houses, and as Dame Fortune was so unkind as to disappoint me I took the resolution to enter my self among the watery tribe, to show some People, who ought to have succourd me, that I am not so easily browbeaten and so timorous as was suggested. If God grants me my life I dont doubt but that I shall do very well, as I have got an excellent commander and the Finest Frigate in the Navy, mounting 8, 16 Pounders on the lower deck and 30, 12 pounders on the upper deck & six, six pounders on the Quar deck, &c. we are busy in getting her ready for sea as soon as possible but I fancy for want of hands and other obstacles we shall not get out of harbour this 2 or 3 months.
