THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SEISMOGRAPH IN CARDIFF. By PRINCIPAL E. H. GRIFFITHS, F.R.S. (CHAIRMAN OF THE SEISMOGRAPH Sub-Committee). The movement for the establishment of a seismograph in connection with the Cardiff Naturalists' Society was inaugurated in April, 1907, by the appointment of a Sub-Committee to inquire into the possibility of obtaining the necessary apparatus and the acquisition of a suitable site. The first act of the Sub-Committee was to communicate with Professor Milne, who very kindly consented to act as advisor in the matter. His original estimate of the cost of the seismograph itself was about £ 50 that of a suitable building about £ 50 and that the annual cost of upkeep would be about £ 6 1os. The Sub-Committee therefore came to the conclusion that a sum of £ yo would be required for the purchase of instruments, and it was desirable that this sum should be raised within the Society itself, and that the City Council should be approached with a request that it would accept and take charge of the instrument and undertake its maintenance. On May 28th, 1907, estimates were received from R. Munro and from the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Co., and it was found that these estimates considerably exceeded the sum named by Professor Milne. At the same time it was decided to issue an appeal for subscriptions, and a deputation was
