OBITUARIES MISS E. M. SAGE (1919-2005) by Minnie Gibbens It is sad to relate that on 30 November, 2005, Miss Betty Sage died after a long illness She had been a member of the Monmouthshire (now Gwent) Local History Council for many years and was its chairman in 1971-2. She was a keen student of history both local and general, and was a founder member of Caerleon Local History Society from 1957. She held offices in the Society from liaison officer on Monmouthshire Local History Council through to president an office which she held until her death. Betty Sage was a lady of many interests. She was involved with her local church and a member of the Monmouthshire Antiquarian Association, Archaeologia Cambrensis and the National Trust. She was also a keen rambler. Betty will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. NAN GRUBB (nee TONKIN) (1942-2005) by Andrea Wall Nan was born in Crickhowell and brought up in Brynmawr where her family were tradespeople and her great grandfather, Alderman William Roberts, was a founder member of Brynmawr Town Council. Nan married Byron Grubb, Secretary of Gwent Local History Council, and moved to Ebbw Vale where they had two children, Jonathan and Andrea. Nan gave up work when she had the children and was a real home maker. The house was always the one that the children's friends would go to and she loved nothing more than having them all around her. She was a wonderful cook and the house was always full of the smells of home-made flap jacks and cakes. Nan not only looked after her own two children but also took care of her nieces and nephew. Even when the children grew up and left home, when they returned to Ebbw Vale for Christmas and holidays, it was still Nan and Byron's home that everyone would congregate at.
