WE are glad that our criticism of the secrecy which has been maintained with regard to Coleg Harlech has drawn a belated explanation from Mr. Thomas Jones. We wish, however, that it had not seemed necessary to him to adopt such a tone of injured virtue; nor can he do anything save protest against his wilful misunderstanding of our complaint. We expressly said that we used the word advertising in no vulgar sense, and that what we were calling for was a candid explanation, for the mutual benefit of the Coleg and the public, of the aims and methods of the institution. We have yet to learn that there is anything undignified in an institution, be it church, college, club, Turned to the last kiss of sunset bronzing their graven faces, Tower cyclopean palisades, deep-filed by relentless tides; Tower the granite battalions, lined high in their terraces, Eternity spelt on their scars, permanence stamped on their sides. Purling and curling and leaping, onward grey-green rush the waves, Dark with the hate of the North wind, black with the spleen of the night; Foaming in cavernous fissures, boiling snow-white in their caves, Loud shuffling the grinding shingle, loud-sucking with lips of spite. With frenzy demoniacal, they, like ban-dogs freed from their thrall, Strike wildly the stubborn stockades, low laid on ocean's firm floor; But over the sea comes a voice, through thunder, and whirlwind, and squall,- The seas have I set in their bounds. Strong is My arm as of yore." So peacefully sleepeth the child, under its coverlet warm, Soft as the light-sailing foam-balls, soft as the sea-mew's feather; So smiles sea-campion and sand-pink, rocked on their tufts by the storm, And bends gnarled and knotted the thorn and knots of cliff-born heather. J. T. LEWIS. The summer time is probably a bad period for the gramophone; at all events the H.M.V. new records for July have not much to interest the music lover. The best are the following: Strauss' "Morgen," and "Standchen," sung by Elizabeth Schumann; Byrd's "This day Christ was born" and "Christe qui luxes et dies," sung by the choir of York Minster; Gibbons' "0 or society, publishing an explanation of its policy. How can a democratic institution possibly do otherwise? At the same time we reiterate our warning that a college for working men cannot suc- ceed except as the result of much missionary enterprise. We should like to see duly qualified persons sent to speak on its behalf in every town and village in Wales. We are quite sure that almost all the churches would gladly provide them with the oppor- tunity. There are few in our land who do not regard the W.E.A. as one of the finest institutions of the age; and there is a widespread desire to assist it in every possible way. ROCKS NEAR ABERYSTWYTH. THE GRAMOPHONE. Lord increase my faith" and "0 clap your hands," sung by the same choir; and Wagner's "Tannhauser" Overture, played by Berlin State Opera Orchestra. This last record is of special interest as a specimen of the new H.M.V. records which are now being made in Germany. If they are all to be as good as this one they are likely to command a big sale.
