SOME WELSH GARDEN VILLAGE SCHEMES IN PROGRESS. RHUBINA FIELDS, NEAR CARDIFF. The Cardiff Workers Garden Village Society has selected one of the most picturesque districts near Cardiff as the scene of its operations. Lord Plymouth performed the opening ceremony last summer on the completion of the earliest batch of houses. Good progress has been made since then, and the village has now a good many inhabitants. The site is very conveniently placed, being but ten minutes' train journey from the centre of Cardiff. MERTHYR TYDFIL. A Co-operative Garden Village has been commenced under the auspices of the Housing Reform Company, and the foundation stone was recently laid of the first group of houses. The new cottages present a striking contrast to the many old and insanitary houses in the borough. The Dowlais portion of it, indeed, has had for many years the unenviable reputation of containing some of the worst slums in the Kingdom. WREXHAM. The Welsh Town-Planning and Housing Trust Limited have obtained control of about 180 acres of land at Acton, near Wrexham, adjacent to important new colliery workings. Considerable progress has been made with the build- ing of the first houses by a Co-Partnership Housing Society known as Wrexham Tenants Limited, under the chairmanship of Lord Kenyon. Fifty houses of various sizes are in course of erection and plans have been prepared for a further 200 Cottages which it is hoped will be commenced immediately. Plans are also being prepared for an Institute to be built on the central square, which will cater for the social and educational needs of the new community. Sites have been reserved for a Church of England and a Free Church. MACHYNLLETH, MONTGOMERYSHIRE. Tregerddi Machynlleth, Cyf,"— a Housing Society, was formed here last summer for the purpose of building a new Garden Village on the outskirts of the town. The grounds are beautifully situated, well timbered and adjoin extensive common lands, on part of which there is a golf course. The first Contract is for the erection of 19 cottages, some of which are being built to form a quadrangle facing a plantation of tall pine trees. Good gardens will be provided, also recreation grounds and spaces for allotments and poultry. LLANIDLOES. MONTGOMERYSHIRE. A Garden Suburb is also in course of construction at Llanidloes, where it is hoped the first 20 houses will be completed in the summer. WELSH NATIONAL MEMORIAL. Brynseiont, a large and convenient private house within one mile of the centre of Carnarvon has been acquired by the King Edward VII. Welsh National Memorial Association for the purposes of a Tuber- culosis Hospital, and the plans for its conversion are sufficiently far advanced to jusify a hope that the new hospital will be opened during the coming Summer. Accommodation will be provided for 38 patients. Brynseiont, which stands on an eminence, overlooking a charming view with Snow- don in the background, was for some years the residence of the late Rev. Herber Evans, D.D. Steady progress is being made in increasing the efficiency of the arrangements for the nursing of tuberculous patients who have not yet entered or have been discharged from hospitals and sanatoria. The Memorial Association is making a special grant of £ 5 per annum to each district nursing association. in respect of services rendered in this way by their nurses, under the direction of the tuberculosis physician, and the number of such nursing organ- isations that have entered into an arrangement with the Memorial Association now exceeds one hundred. The following figures relating to the patients treated by the Memorial Association up to December 31st, 1913 were submitted to a meeting of the Council held at Cardiff on the 23rd January last:- Non Insured Insured. Total. Patients in Sanatoria 526 272 798 Hospitals 531 487 1018 1816 Examined, treated or recommended for treatment at Institute and Visiting Stations. 9179.
