Through the incentive given by the National Eisteddfod, many pens in Wales were busy, during the early years of the twentieth century, compiling collective biographies of Welshmen (of the period, 1700-1900) who were thought notable or eminent in theology, law, literature, the arts and sciences, &c. Five of these compilers gave hostages to fortune and delight to their fellow-countrymen by putting the fruit of their labours into print, as follows Jones, Edward.
