Figure 1 Road. Additionally, a substantial part of this area is also character- ised by a number of isolated corner shops of all functional types (fig. 1). The retail trade structure of the area reflects to a large extent the importance of these traditional retail patterns within the inner suburbs of Swansea. Food trades, including general stores, account for well over 46% of all retail establishments, with grocers and general stores being by far the most ubiquitous (table 1). The second most important category is that of household goods, a group that embraces both the traditional hardware shop and the more recent 'Do-it-Yourself' type of store. In essence they all function as local community shops, with very few involved in trade with people from outside the immediate area.
