4. Helen Gladys, assistant matron in a hospital at Pretoria, South Africa. 5. Gloria Clare. In the foregoing pages we have followed the trail of an ancient family from the banks of the Severn and the Wye to the fertile lands that flank the waters of the Teifi, passing through some eight hundred and fifty years of time. The family of Lloyd illustrate the remarkable power of endurance of the uchelwyr, their resilience and tenacity, and their ability not only, in many instances, to retain the lands patiently acquired by their forebears, but their capacity as leaders of the com- munity in which they lived. The history of the Lloyds is the history of the survival of the old Welsh tradition. FRANCIS JONES Wales Herald of Arms Extraordinary
